The fourth episode gives the viewer advice on how to reduce the security threats posed by social networking. We show how Kaspersky’s PURE software can help remove spam and malware, but that the most important protection lies in measures taken by social-networkers themselves to limit access to sensitive information.

The second episode of the Lady Geek TV Security Show series shows the viewer how to defend against common security threats including viruses, phishing software and spyware. We also show why it’s important to keep Internet security software such as Kaspersky PURE up to date in order to protect against the latest threats.

In addition to the LadyGeek TV list on how to keep secure online I’d also add that you should ensure that you have auto update turned on for your antivirus software and for your OS so that you always have the latest fixes and updates.

It was that time again, another birthday for London Girl Geek Dinners and this time Mind Candy kindly hosted the event. Since the lovely Judith Lewis was the organiser, chocolate was involved. A lot, of, chocolate. Monty Bojangles was the highlight with some truffle action and a giant chocolate cake which I never actually got to taste. I was too busy raiding the Mind Candy beer fridge (my apologies).

It wasn’t all about the food however, as we got some interesting and inspiring talks from the Mind Candy staff about Mind Candy and the fun things for them on the horizon. They are doing some great things with the Moshi Monsters franchise and I’m sure it will continue to grow with some great ideas.

LJ Rich from BBC Click gave us some insightful tips on how to communicate an idea to others so that it becomes a reality. She also had a run in with an Angry Bird; this is what happens when you eat all the truffles (actually it was me /guilty).

The talks were followed by some nice light refreshments in the form of wine provided by Dinasto Vivanco, and of course more truffles and having a play with some of the Moshi Monsters dotted around the room. I have to say that Mind Candy seems like a really cool place to work!

The birthday party kicked off quite merrily and then I spotted several things. First I noticed the large projector used for the presentations, an amp and then a set of Rock Band drums. It didn’t take me long to find the PS3 hiding in a cupboard; unfortunately the XBox 360 was missing. A couple of button presses on the amp and Mortal Kombat was loading. You can’t hide these things from me… a lot of shouting and screaming was involved as other girl geeks joined in.

A raffle was held with some cookery prizes and yes there was a bar of chocolate in them. By sheer luck the Girl Geek Dinners founder got something! A big thanks goes to Judith for giving up her time to make LGGD a success, the helpers, all the sponsors on the day, the speakers and last but not least Sarah Blow Lamb for starting the Girl Geek Dinners phenomenon in the first place… all those years ago. Roll on 7!

Guy Kawasaki visited the UK a couple of months back and just before he did we had a brief email exchange resulting in him putting me in touch with his publishing house to get hold of a review copy of his latest book.

My path has crossed with Guy’s on a few occasions through things like TweetMeme where he advised at a board level through to his latest UK visit where we nearly ended up meeting in person. I’ve followed Guy’s blog on and off for some time and he always comes up with good articles and business insights.

Enchantment to me is an extension of thoughts, insights and business checklists that are a well thought out and more structured. What I like about this book is that although Guy is male he takes into account the fact that business and interaction between men and women can be different and that one approach does not necessarily work for everyone. he therefore suggests alternatives in a matter of fact and sensible way that is not in any way condescending to either gender. (what some may class as a difficult skill to master)

Guy’s understanding of marketing and business strategy is second to none and this book pulls in social, psychological and business strategy on both a one to one and business to consumer level. It looks at internal company engagement and interactions as well as external influence and engagement. I’m not going to give away all of Guy’s gems because he does a better job than I ever would in his book.

Business books on average I put down about half way through, this one I finished in 3 days despite it being 190 pages. It is engaging, compelling and easy to read either in small segments or larger chunks. It’s a great train read with practical steps that you can use straight away.

I know I may sound a bit fluffy and a bit of a Guy Kawasaki fan girl but until you read Enchantment and try bits of it out you will probably continue to think that. Just give it the benefit of the doubt. Hidden within this book are a few gems that unwittingly I did when I set up and continue to do whilst running Girl Geek Dinners and they work under the right circumstances. This book is as close as you’ll get at the moment to understanding the approach I took with my events unless I ever get round to writing the business lessons behind Girl Geek Dinners!
