…this article from blu-ray.com states that Warner Bros/New Line shift to Blu-Ray exclusively was “due to the format’s lack of region coding”. Wow… not much I can say about one of the most annoying “features” of current DVD movies and something else which I think should be made illegal.

Regional encoding can’t be removed until distribution rights change within the movie industry. If release dates for movies (and TV series, for that matter) were the same worldwide, then it would be a viable option for the people that ultimately control everything and want to make the money. I’m pretty sure you couldn’t ban something that is there to, in a really annoying way, protect the “integrity” (for want of a better word) of film producers.

“In order to preserve the financial integrity of the theatrical distribution of a particular film, it is not possible (under normal conditions) to have a friend in the U.S. send a DVD copy of the film to the country where it is in theatrical release and be able to play the DVD on a player there.” (about)

Interesting, never the less. The article above also speculates on a few other reasons regional DVDs might exist.
