This particular event was sparked as a result of not being able to attend Wiki Wednesday last time as it clashed with our event. Both myself and Nicole Mathison wanted to attend the event, so we thought that we would try to do a bit of a joint one. We got in touch with David Terrar and pretty much did London Girl Geek Dinners meets Wiki Wednesdays… but on a thursday evening… not quite the same I hear you say, and yet we had Angela Beesley from Wikia (in photo with Tom Starling also from Wikia) talking about how Wikia and Wikipedia works in terms of the internal structure of the site, content and financials of free to use wikis. She’s such an interesting person and the work she does is really very interesting too.
David Terrar also gave a really good introduction to wiki’s, wiki wednesdays and how they can be used in different scenarios. He spoke about a few of the different events and the people who turn up. He also spoke about the male/ female ratio at the event. One interesting fact that came from Angela Beesley was that there are overall a lower percentage of females who use wiki’s but out of those who use them, more of the females are involved in mediation of content and as such get a higher ranking in the wiki world.
Angela Saini was at the event and was doing sound bytes for a Womens Hour session that will be showing on Radio Four’s at some point in the near future. I’ll let you know when that’s on as soon as I know. It’s all about females an technology.
