I got e-mailed about this site when it was just coming out of beta. And the title of the post is pretty much the first thing that went through my mind. What on earth is Glogster?
Well I decided to go on the hunt and find out what it is…. it’s a site that is pretty much like a mySpace page only it’s easier to do your own layout and you embed the content wherever and however you like. If you’re an arty sort of person then you’ll love this little site but if you are like me then you may struggle to create anything that is funky and cool! It reminded me a bit of a desktop when I made my one… :S I’m struggling to find a good use for it… OK so initially I thought the video and picture functionality wasn’t working when using Firefox rather than IE. It turns out that in fact they do upload and magically appear in your folder but you don’t get any feedback as they upload. It allows you to continue with other design stuff in the meantime. If you’re expecting that it makes for a really useful piece of functionality but if you’re not then you think it’s not working. It could be worth showing the upload process somewhere on the screen to stop any confusion and I’m looking forward to seeing that sort of functionality soon.
If I had found a Seesmic plugin for it or even a U-Tube or Viddler one then I could have found all sorts of things that we could use it for… In fact I would get quite excited by that sort of thing. It would make it stand out a bit. I might have considered doing an event specific glog… and other stuff like that if the functionality were better… who knows… It’s definitely aimed at a very generic market and the basics are there. If you want to have a look the url is here: http://girlygeekdom.glogster.com/ I’ve not put a lot on my one but if you want to create your own then you can do!
Personal embarrassment for lack of design skills aside the site is fun and it’s well designed. It would be nice to be able to add in other stuff from other sites as a snippet or screen grab but I guess things like that will come as the site matures and the devs over there have time to create the add ons. (and apparently the developers are working on lots of new things! Including the plugins suggested here!)
All in all a site to watch and see what happens. It will be interesting to see if they take on board the comments here or whether they just stop there with it!
Please note this is a paid for post
