Robert Loch questioned the validity of using “Geek” in event titles when he commented on Ben Griffiths blog. What do you think? Offensive? Fun? or Otherwise….

I’m interested in hearing the responses as I am one of the people who looks after the girl geek dinners. We use the word as a light hearted jest but it’s not the first time that people have asked me about the event name… It was meant to be light hearted fun… I would hope that it doesn’t put the developers off…

Geek is a fine word, I’m proud to be a geek. Now nerd is a very different word. I am a developer, but I’m also a gadget fiend…

i can’t speak for the developers, not being one… but I do think that the term ‘geek’ is potentially problematic. Geekism is kind of a subjective thing. Do I have to be writing code all day to be a geek? (that is, are only developers geeks?) I don’t think so. But then… perhaps some do.

I know that to people who I don’t work with (actually, even lots of people I do work with) I’m a geek. But I’m not a developer. Am I a geek? Depends who’s asking I guess.
