Last year was quite a dramatic year for me with the Girl Geek Dinners taking off well and members growing massively. At the beginning of 2006 it hadn’t even entered into my thoughts that I would be doing a Girl Geek Dinner in Barcelona alongside TechEd and ITForum. As such the growth has been carefully managed and I think we are reaching a healthy balance. Rather than forcing growth with the events I am letting them flow organically. Just looking and seeing where they end up going.
2007 looks like it is full of interesting and exciting times with the first ever Brighton Girl Geek Dinner taking place in January, as well as events running in Barcelona again and possibly one starting in South Africa too. I can’t wait to see where this year takes the events.
Over the last 12 months I have learnt a lot about the community that I am building and one of the biggest things is how much the community is willing to support those building it up. I for one really appreciate the support from everyone around me who has helped to get the events to where they are today. As much as people seem to think that one person has created the events, they don’t happen without a lot of other people in the background and I for one never forget that! I have learnt that those people are far more important than I am because without them the events would never be as good as they are right now.
I have one question for people who attend the girl geek dinners, what do you want to see happen with them in 2007? As I always say, this is your community, as such you are integral to it’s future. Let me know what you want and we will do our best to achieve it over the course of the year!
