amazonlogoWould you believe it… 15 years ago today Amazon.com sold it’s first product online.  Back in those days people really didn’t think that sites like Amazon would exist today.  They thought that they were doomed to fail…  Why would anyone trust the internet after all…  but then again we had the .com boom which with it brough a whole raft of companies with it…

Technology moved on as did people’s perceptions of safety and financial transactions online.  There were a whole raft of new companies that came about during this time but not that many that succeeded.  On the right you can see a sample of those who got lost in the world of Web 1.0

Here’s a few of the features of that era as defined on Wikipedia:Web 1.0 Esquire

  • Static pages instead of dynamic user-generated content.[5]
  • The use of framesets.
  • Proprietary HTML extensions such as the <blink> and <marquee> tags introduced during the first browser war.
  • Online guestbooks.
  • GIF buttons, typically 88×31 pixels in size promoting web browsers and other products.[6]
  • HTML forms sent via email. A user would fill in a form, and upon clicking submit their email client would attempt to send an email containing the form’s details.[7]

Would you believe that was 15 years ago! Here’s the timeline to prove it!

Now what about those companies that didn’t make it…. who were they?  Well Esquire have covered that one for you as well!

So happy 15th Birthday Amazon! And thanks for taking on a brief history of the internet!
