Energy prices are constantly rising, inflation and income is static to dropping meaning that we are all looking to find sensible ways to save money. Christmas has been and gone the next thing we all expect to see are the bills being posted through the letterbox. Wouldn’t it be nice if there was a way to ensure that the bills were just that little bit less painful each time they came in?
That’s where smart meters and data come into their own. What is a smart meter and why should I care? Quite simply these devices sit in your home and monitor the amount of electricity that you are using. You can see what you are using when and if you have things turned on that you don’t need on. So if you are anything like me and leave the porch light on by accident all day you can see at a glance that it has cost you £2 each day you forget to turn it off. In fact that peak pay even make me go to the porch and turn the light off if it’s really not needed.
Rather than me giving you all the facts on the benefits of smart meters why not take a look at the Oxford Report it describes the benefits of the smart meters to you and the UK as a whole.Personally I think smart meters are something that I will be using in the very near future and if there is a way to then hook this into home automation then I’m all up for that too! Once I have one in my hands I’ll let you know how they work in practice and get them all set up at home. You can find out more about the British Gas smart meters on their website.
If everyone used smart meters in the UK it would be an interesting scenario as it would mean that we probably end up producing more electricity than we need which means we could cut our power station use or use that excess for things like electric cars and alternative transport.
