Following on, appropriately enough, from Sarah’s Geek Speakr post earlier today, I will be standing in for her in representing the London Girl Geeks at the next British Computer Society (BCS) North London Branch event on Wednesday. During the brief talk, I’ll also cover some important diversity initiatives currently underway in Hewlett-Packard in Europe*. Fellow panelists will include Judith deCabbit Lewis, who spoke at our March 2008 event in London, and Maggie Berry from Women in Technology. The event, ‘Women in IT – Making a Difference’, will be held at the BCS offices by Covent Garden. It’s free-of-charge, with a focus on soliciting involvement and views from the audience, so if you’re free that evening and wish to participate, do sign-up to attend.

In preparation, I wrote up the below brief notes on how I perceive the Girl Geek Events as being complementary to other events for women working in/with IT, and thought these might be worth sharing in order to see if this reflected your opinons.

So, please do click on and review the points, and add what you consider uniquely useful about the Girl Geek community if not already listed here — all constructive comments welcomed!

If you comment before Wednesday, I’ll add your unique additions during the talk, attributed to you of course. In any case, your points will help us focus on developing those aspects of the events you consider are most worthwhile for you.

*Disclosure: I work with HP, however I am impartial in relation to the company’s diversity initiative and am involved in the project voluntarily. I have mentioned and promote this scheme only to encourage management in other companies to adopt similar schemes, if they have not already.
