So we had our very first ever girl geek skype cast online this evening, it had a couple of hickups with sound issues at first and the url ended up changing because I did a test to see if it was working and Skype had done an update which rendered the old session unusable. I re-sent the url and re-posted it online.

The conversation started off with people just hanging about whilst everyone got online and then things started taking shape with us talking about the events clashes that have happened in feb and I explained how this had all happened. In short I booked the date back in December with my speaker and let other organisers know that, it was published on the organisers google calendar and upcoming so that people knew about it in advance. Unfortunately however other organisers haven’t all been doing the same and as such have ended up with the usual London issue of too many events on the same night. (what fun!) This leaves the people who want to attend the events wondering which event to come along to. The way I see it at the moment is that there are a lot of people wanting lots of different topics and as such it will hopefully pan out as the events are all talking about different subjects. Events that I know of that are on the same night as the girl geek dinner on the 21st are NxtGen Usergroup, Wiki Wednesday and the Geek Dinner.

Hopefully people will start looking at upcoming and such for co-ordinating but some how I still can’t see that happening. We went on to talk about online events as well as in person ones. We won’t be getting rid of the in person events so don’t worry about that, this was an added bonus event to try out the skype software. We are looking at doing a few more little tests like this to show apps that people want to share and to maybe do fun little vids of things. One thing that I didn’t discuss in the skypecast was making info on being in the tech industry available to school age peeps so that they can really see what being a developer, or an architect or a software tester etc is all about. Also showing the range of different industry areas and how they are interesting and such.

There are a whole load of tech tools that we are currently looking into using for online style events stuffs and as we find the good ones we’ll start using them and exposing them to you! I like playing with the tech tools so expect a few more experimental sessions!
